Week 4

Dear Families,

As we approach the long weekend, we thank you for your co-operation and support of students during the first few weeks of the new year. Adjusting to school routines after a long break can be tiring for some and enlivening for others.

However things are manifesting for you in your homes, I encourage you to communicate with your child’s teacher, understanding, support, advice and adjustments can always be discussed to support positive interactions and optimum learning conditions.

As we inch towards the equinox, equal day and night, little signs and changes are noted in the landscape, the white flowers of Bunuru, adolescent marsupials and birds…

Simply sitting, walking and playing with your children in nature can provide them with deep insights into the workings of the world at large.

Rudolf Steiner spoke at length about reciprocity in both human relationships and in one’s connection with the natural world. He identified immersion and true connection to nature to be a powerful motivation for self-responsibility.

Add to this, simple celebrations and shared food and you have a recipe for conscious and really enjoyable and meaningful parenting.

This week’s verse from Steiner’s calendar of the soul makes mention of the mysterious workings of memory as a force that surrounds newly received experience.

To wrap new givenness

Secretly within memory

Is my further quest for meaning:

It should inwardly awaken

Strengthening forces of selfhood

And evolve to give me of myself.

By working artistically with students, teachers utilise deep memory possibilities, anchored in positive emotional responses and connections, within their lessons.

Memorable experience, that is gained from multisensory immersion in activities, offers students the opportunity to find a sense of meaning and place in the world at every turn.

Teaching done well from this perspective is an aspiration for Waldorf teachers worldwide.

As I speak with our teachers about the learning plans for their classes, I can clearly see the wonderful opportunities being availed to your children each day.

Best Wishes,

Jacqui

Class 6  'Rome wasn't built in a day!'

Walking into the Class 6 room this year is a joy in every step. The children are well prepared, enthusiastic and ready to learn. We have begun our main lesson block on Rome, starting with a review of our prior learning in ‘Ancient Civilisations’.

The children began by making a physical timeline taking us back to 3700bc to the age of Mesopotamia and Persia. We then mapped the timeline every 400 years to bring us through Ancient India, to Egypt, to Greece and then to the roads that lead to Rome. Historically we stepped our way through the changing paths of divine thinking to more conceptual thought, bringing to light the children’s own pathway in development as we start to reach the 12 year.

Here, the rich teaching of history and the revolving stories of time can take their place in the moral feeling for our ancestors. Our discussions as a class can delve into our feelings for right and wrong and for social justice.  Responding to the children’s enthusiasm we are now delving deeper into the role of ‘Alexander the Great’ which sees the class drafting and editing their own versions of his epic journey, his somewhat ‘self-righteous’ path, and his sudden fall from grace. What would he have done next we ‘wonder’?!

‘At all times and in all aspects, teaching history is never a matter of passing on information, of communicating knowledge just for the sake of knowledge. History is treated as a subject of immense moral and social importance, but also as a therapy, as a healing element for the tensions and problems at each step of the process of growing up’

Charles Kovacs  ‘Ancient Rome’

Steiner Voices Podcast Series

Dear Families

Today the S.E.A (Steiner Education Australia) are delighted to launch Steiner Voices, a podcast series hosted by the S.E.A. Steiner Voices will be a forum for some of the varied voices of Steiner school communities and their people around the country, of teachers, parents and students.

The Steiner Voices podcast is available on spotify and apple podcast platforms, and can be accessed through the Steiner Education Australia website. New episodes will be released each fortnight, where you’ll meet some of the many people who make our Australian Steiner schools such vibrant learning communities.

Steiner X

…the voices of ex-Steiner students, telling their stories, their memories of school, their careers since school, and the impact their Steiner schooling had on them.

Steiner Y

…for parents in Steiner schools, answering the question Why Steiner? Here you will hear the voices of Steiner educators and parents telling their stories of what drew them to enrol their children in a Steiner school, plus some of their deeper understandings of the Steiner school journey and why it’s so important for our children.

Steiner Z

…for teachers, our Steiner Z series. Here you will meet Steiner teachers from around the country talking about what makes teaching in Steiner schools so satisfying both professionally and personally. And to Gen Z teachers, here’s a call out to give you an insight into what an inspiring vocation teaching in a Steiner school can be.

The first episode is now available.

How did a dentist help a parent choose a Steiner education?

In this episode of Steiner Y, you are going to meet parent Mary Heard and hear of her journey as a parent in Steiner schools, started by a comment from a dentist, a fascinating story of both education and self healing.

Mary not only found an education that nurtured her two children throughout their schooling, but she also found a community and an approach to life that nurtured her personally as well.
