Week 2
Dear families,
Term Two is now well underway with the recent rains bringing a freshness to thinking, as poetically outlined in this week’s calendar verse.
I have enjoyed several inspired conversations with staff members in recent days, brainstorming ideas that will help bring the midwinter festival to its own special light this year.
Last week I was lucky enough to be in Canberra with Business Manager Jane , for an SEA conference and forum to discuss future directions for Steiner Education in Australia.
Contemplating the uncertainties of the future against the backdrop of the Federal Election was serendipitous to say the least! With political parties seeking sway through commentaries on educational funding and an awareness of polarised views in the wider society about the nature of schooling there was much outward discussion as well as inward contemplation.
I love this small quote from Nobel Prize winner Ilya Prigogine;
“The future is uncertain…but uncertainty is at the very heart of human creativity.”
As a national gathering we sought to gain contextual understanding, drawing from presentations delivered by international and national guest speakers and industry representatives. The shaping of current and future initiatives is dependent upon such opportunities to come together and reflect and small seeds of responsive action began to develop in my mind throughout the three days of study. I am very grateful to be in a position to attend such events on behalf of our school.
Meanwhile, upon my return on Monday, I was greeted by the expectant and excited campers ready to head out onto the coast for hiking and camping. What a joy! This is something that I treasure in our school. The willingness of staff to engage in the wildness of camping with kids in the bush and to offer the deep learning and connectedness that it inevitably brings.

Madu Waldorf School
During the Easter break Attie and I spent a few days at the Madu school in Ubud with Class 6 teacher Ibu. We also met with Class 5 and 4 teachers as well as a taking a tour of the school and seeing their new developments as they create a space for the new Class 7. The parents have been greatly involved in planning the new space which includes some simple elevated classrooms, a volleyball net and imaginative planting to allow the older children space to grow and learn.
We finished our time in the Kindergartens, a wonderfully simple bamboo house made by a local craftsmen.
Ibu was very welcoming and we were able to connect over so many topics including class plays, the Greek Olympics and how we work to bring our own indigenous stories into the curriculum. Ibu will be taking a break from teaching next year as her class graduates and I very much look forward to welcoming her here for a visit 🙏

Class 4 Norse Myths
Class Four began their journey of Norse Myths exploring the image of Ginnungagap, an empty abyss that existed between the realms of fire and ice. The intense meeting of scorching heat, frost and darkness brought forth the creation of life and the cosmos. From here, we met the giant Ymir and the cow Audhumal with her four rivers of life sustaining milk. We used alliteration in our verse and movement work and learned of the nine Norse worlds and the healing power of the Norns, the weavers of destiny. We explored the nature of the dragon of destruction who lived deep underground and gnawed at the roots of the world tree, Yggdrasil, creating wounds that were healed by sacred water. Stories like this echoed throughout the Main lesson block as we explored the characters and journeys of gods and goddesses, frost giants, elves, dwarves and many other beings and aspects of relating. In this way, these stories speak to the multitudes of colour and shades of the human condition, often placing bravery, kindness and honour as central to experiences.
Inspired by the all-knowing Odin’s experience of seeing twigs form into symbols and base of the written language, we made runes from salt dough and sang with great zeal, songs such as ‘Valhalla calling’ and others in the Norwegian tongue which has been quite the challenge! The children have now begun fully writing their own creative compositions in their Main Lesson Book, which takes time and the continuous development of self-editing skills. It was lovely to see the children rising to this challenge with a poetic sensitivity.
