In spring’s sunlit hour My heart like a flower Unfolds with great power. And out into the joyful world My feeling-forces are unfurled. All things I love-fire, water, air, The stones, the stars, the mighty sun, Plants, creatures, people everywhere For God is in them, every one. In the Light of a Child -Michael Hedley Burton

Week 4
Dear Families,
It is with great pleasure that I return to school following an extended period of leave. Thank you to those who have extended a warm welcome back. I am especially grateful to my wonderful colleagues who have supported me in my absence and provided seamless cover during my absence.
Alongside 16 colleagues from around Australia, I was lucky enough to be a part of an international study tour, visiting other Steiner/Waldorf schools, associated organisations and sites of significance in Germany, Switzerland and Thailand.
This immersive and deeply impactful experience was hugely affirming in relation to the educational experience we provide here in our little Yallingup school and positively inspiring for me in my work.
Our group was warmly welcomed in a wide range of contexts and provided access to remarkable workings and simply incredible individuals providing others with the benefits of initiatives born out of Rudolf Steiner’s life work.
Education, health, architecture and biodynamic biodynamic gardening all featured throughout the journey.
I have much to process and look forward to sharing my insights gained with staff, students and families.
Perhaps one especially inspiring feature was to witness firsthand the work being done to assist children in and from trauma landscapes, be it war zones or natural disaster sites. This has led to the development of an emergency pedagogy that is being applied in a range of settings.
As a result, alongside some of the tour group, I will be undertaking some training to develop my understanding and capacities working in this area.
It is a privilege to be able to engage with our wider demographic and receive expanded opportunities. Steiner Education Australia is working diligently to promote exceptional curriculum directions for the future in our country.
Warmly,
Jacqui
Farewell to Annie
Current and past YSS families are invited to a farewell afternoon tea for our beloved handwork teacher in the school hall on:

There will be light refreshments for afternoon tea, a display of our Annie’s time at the school, and the opportunity to celebrate all that she has shared with us. Please RSVP to Victoria on 0466 068 489 or victoria.robertson@yss.wa.edu.au and spread the word to past students and their families.
Looking forward to seeing you there!

Carbunup River Playgroup Busy Bee
Just before the start of Term 4, a small but very effective band of Playgroup parents came together at Carbunup to give it some much-needed TLC. Chairs and tables were sanded and varnished; outside furniture got a protective coat; tyre planters were created and painted and the big pile of soil was used to fill the planters. Other Playgroup families took jobs home to do, such as book repairs and covering; wooden toy repairs, and cutting paper to size for drawing. A big thank you to all who came on the day, or who did repairs and other jobs !

News from Class Five Part 2
Rudolf Steiner posed this question to the teachers of the first Waldorf School in 1919,
How will we characterise the plant kingdom to the young student in a way that will appeal to their feeling life and imagination as well as connect with the powers of thought?
After three days of useful and intelligent discussion the general ideas expressed focussed on finding imaginations suitable for presenting each division of the plant kingdom in a way that connected the plant to the earths elements and to find a way to connect the various divisions of plants to aspects of the human being. A way at viewing the plants as living expressions of the earth’s soul. He then proposed teaching the plant kingdom as a kind of reflective mirror of the developmental stages of the human being from infancy to adolescence. In this way you can see the whole of the plant kingdom expressing the human soul as stages of unfolding capacities.
As we have moved through the developmental stages of the plant kingdom we have connected to the growing child; baby to adolescence. Our weekly Makuru bushwalks provided the perfect opportunity to see the growing fungi, algae, moss, lichen, ferns and then the explosion of flowers in Djilba connected us to the higher order plants. In the classroom we experimented in growing our own mould, fungi and moss that was observed through hand lenses to add detail to our drawings.
While in Perth for the Greek Olympics we called into Kings Park Botanical Garden and took part in the Brilliant Botanists program. The children were Botanists for the day where they explored, classified and observed plants. Making further connections from seed to adult plants discovering the importance of germination, photosynthesis and pollination. They also investigated seed germination of a WA native. In a controlled setting the children planted seeds local to our area, a near extinct Acacia denticulosa. Smoke water was applied to some and some seeds were scratched with sand paper (scarification). So far, the germinated seeds are the ones that had smoke water and scarification. Hopefully they will continue to grow so we can add them to our school garden. After that amazing experience we wandered around the stunning park during the Djilba season, the season of plenty and it did not disappoint.
