Week 6

In Steiner Schools worldwide, many festivals are observed throughout the course of the year and celebrated creatively with students.

Next week, at the turning of the equinox, equal day and night, the teachers will celebrate the feeling of balance with students in collaboration with local artisan Elaine Clocherty. An artistic reflection will be facilitated to mark the moment.

In a lecture that Rudolf Steiner gave on the 8th of April 1923, he discusses the relationships between the cycles of nature and the experience of the human being and draws attention to teachings from ancient times. Specifically, regarding the Autumn Equinox, we are reminded of an old motto;

         “Look around Thee”

This contemplation formed part of a year-round series of suggestions for inner contemplation and development.

Contemplating the wisdom of nature is never outdated and, in our region, it is a magical time of the year.

It is intriguing to contemplate Steiner’s perspective relating to the characteristics of Autumn, as our landscape is so vastly different to the European autumnal environment. For us leaves will start to appear rather than disappear, waters will begin to flow and rainbows appear.

We ask ourselves, what does the season say? Bunuru…adolescence, ripening djiriji ( Zamia Palm), heat and changeability, wind followed by profoundly still afternoons…

Engaging in the process of identifying what is reflected in the world around us, can help us toward a greater understanding of our place in the world, uplifting both ourselves and others.

This, Steiner points out, takes courage!

Hence, the imagery of Michael and the dragon and all the stories that have evolved from the original still have a validity and place amongst us.

Many teachers will be weaving dragon tales into the coming days with their classes. Eggs will crack and scales become luminous…

Michaelic tradition heralds the Archangel Michael.

The figure of Michael confronting the dragon represents the image of humankind fighting its way free from endless desires and limitations in the search for higher being.

The virtue of kindness can clearly be associated with the valiant fight. For true kindness, as Steiner outlined, is born from transformed anger.

Equally as potent, and intrinsically linked to kindness, is the practice of restraint and the pursuit of balance in one’s life.

When we place our annoyances and gripes into the steadiness of our inner gaze and restrict the reactive tendency, we have the forging of our own Michaelic sword, smelted from the cosmic iron in our own bloodstream.

The Michaelic eye then turns outward, the sword a ray of love and light that can serve others.

“Anger that is overcome and purified will be transformed into the love that is its counterpart. A loving hand is seldom one that has never been clenched in response to injustice or folly. Anger and love are complementary.”

                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                   Rudolf Steiner.

Best Wishes everyone,

Jacqui

Class 1

Class One have been working hard all term embroidering their names for their crayon rolls. As the name plate is completed, with a “bubble stitch” (blanket stitch) edging, the student leaves their finished work out for the Crayon Fairy, who sneaks into the classroom overnight and attaches it to their very own crayon roll. The Crayon Fairy has been very impressed with the Class Ones care of their shared crayons, so has included some brand new crayons in each crayon roll.

Meanwhile, we have also been working on a cooperative craft project- our kindness ball. Each child added a layer of wet felt to the ball while thinking their kindest thoughts. Once it was full of kind thoughts, it was left to dry into a beautiful ball. Each afternoon, we pass around the ball sharing kind acts we have noticed amongst the class.

Class 2

The first half of term, one 2025 has seen class two embrace new routines and new challenges with their characteristic verve and enthusiasm.

At swimming lessons, they conducted themselves admirably, dealing flexibly with changing schedules, organising their belongings and interacting respectfully with new teachers.

We have been working with Celtic Tales in our Main Lessons, immersing ourselves in the story of The King of Ireland’s Son who travels all over Eire on his enchanted steed, trying to rescue Fedelma, his love. He encounters magical creatures of every sort, comes to understand his own moral strengths and weaknesses.

Class two children have worked with this deeply engaging story, acting chapters out through play, using their developing literacy skills to write about parts of the story.

Steiner Voices Podcast Series

Dear Families

Today the S.E.A (Steiner Education Australia) are delighted to launch Steiner Voices, a podcast series hosted by the S.E.A. Steiner Voices will be a forum for some of the varied voices of Steiner school communities and their people around the country, of teachers, parents and students.

The Steiner Voices podcast is available on spotify and apple podcast platforms, and can be accessed through the Steiner Education Australia website. New episodes will be released each fortnight, where you’ll meet some of the many people who make our Australian Steiner schools such vibrant learning communities.

Steiner X

…the voices of ex-Steiner students, telling their stories, their memories of school, their careers since school, and the impact their Steiner schooling had on them.

Steiner Y

…for parents in Steiner schools, answering the question Why Steiner? Here you will hear the voices of Steiner educators and parents telling their stories of what drew them to enrol their children in a Steiner school, plus some of their deeper understandings of the Steiner school journey and why it’s so important for our children.

Steiner Z

…for teachers, our Steiner Z series. Here you will meet Steiner teachers from around the country talking about what makes teaching in Steiner schools so satisfying both professionally and personally. And to Gen Z teachers, here’s a call out to give you an insight into what an inspiring vocation teaching in a Steiner school can be.

The first episode is now available.

How did a dentist help a parent choose a Steiner education?

In this episode of Steiner Y, you are going to meet parent Mary Heard and hear of her journey as a parent in Steiner schools, started by a comment from a dentist, a fascinating story of both education and self healing.

Mary not only found an education that nurtured her two children throughout their schooling, but she also found a community and an approach to life that nurtured her personally as well.
