We acknowledge the Wadandi (Saltwater people) as the traditional custodians of these lands, skies and waterways where we come together at Yallingup Steiner School, and where learning has taken place for thousands of years.
We extend this respect to all First Nations people and thank the Ancestors, Elders, and custodians of the Wadandi community, who have cared for and continue to nurture Country, in their many restoration projects, community and cultural research and spiritual wisdom of the earth as sacred.

Welcome to Week 6
The Heart of Our School
A Steiner education looks a little different from what many of us may remember of school. That difference is not easy to put into words but it reflects a set of 7 core principles, shared by every Steiner school across Australia, that quietly shape every morning circle, every lesson and every national development. Steiner Education Australia is actively of a much larger global Waldorf community, where practice and learning environments resonate with distinctive commonality. When visiting schools in Europe and Asia, I was reminded time and again of the similarities between our schools, and that was largely down to the people I encountered. Open hearts, open minds, welcome attitudes and deep interest in the thoughts and experiences of others, with a firm orientation to the work of Rudolf Steiner and the shared vision of an ethical world future.
The first principle:
Honouring each child’s unfolding spirit. The recognition of the unfolding spirit of each individual informs all aspects of the school.
We see each child as a unique individual whose thinking, feeling, willing, and creative, social and spiritual capacities are all worth nurturing. Education isn’t only about what they know but about who they are becoming.
Working with rhythms and an anthroposophical understanding of child development, lessons, materials and expectations are matched to where our children genuinely are. Direct experience comes before abstraction, imagination is given time and goodness, beauty and truth are woven through everything we do.
I like to partner this with Core Principle five:
The conscious establishment of human relationships fosters individual and community health.
Relationships at the centre! Kind and considerate relationships based on respect and free from self-servitude, between teachers, students, parents and the wider community. These are held as essential to a healthy school. Children thrive when the adults around them know one another well and demonstrate the virtues we wish to open our students up to.
This is exactly why we’d love to see you at this week’s Curry Night!!
Whether you’ve been with our school for years or you’re brand new, come for a warm meal and good company. There’ll be plenty of curry (vegetarian and child-friendly options included), lots of excited children, hungry staff and no agenda but being together.
With Djeran rains forecast this week, there’s no nicer way to greet the turning of the year than by sharing a warm meal.
Thank you to our P&F for making the evening happen and strengthening our sense of community. Thank you also to the wonderful team at Spice Odyssey who so generously support the event.
Looking a little further ahead, busy preparations are already afoot for our Winter Festival. Apples, lanterns, and a new story written just for our students are quietly taking shape behind the scenes. Please mark your calendar for Monday June 22nd
Kindest Regards,

Curry Night
As Curry Night approaches, Class Four and Class Six are getting into the spirit and eagerly preparing some fun fundraising activities to support their classes.
Class 4 Local Area Mapping
Class 4 have been exploring on how a bird’s eye view of the local environment can be built up from walks and drawn pictures. Over the weeks, they have been using different measurement skills learnt from Class 3 to draw a map of the school and the Cape to Cape area. Through stories they have come to appreciate the environmental changes to the local area that have occurred over the last 200-250 years.
The students will continue to explore the local environment during our bushwalking on Wadandi Boodja in term 2 and term 3. We are grateful to have the opportunity to immerse ourselves in these weekly outings which connect us to country.

EURYTHMY CIRCLES
Eurythmy classes have begun again for class 1 to class 6.
Stand on our feet, upright, waiting quietly in a circle with equal spacing.
4 seconds and the task is done.
We are aware of each other at the same time as standing individually.
Now we are ready to move. Directions are given and music is played by dear Anna Bogacheva a highly trained pianist from Ukraine. Top quality!
We are walking together, now turning and chain dancing.
All the teaching inspiration meets the curriculum and the epoch the child is living in.
The teaching process meets the Childs developmental stage, and I use this as a guide to inspire what I bring to the children.
Their class teacher also gives guidance (especially for their class plays)
C1) Fairytales
C2) Fables and animals
C3) Celtic
C4) Norse Myths
C5) Greece
C6) Roman Law
Geometry plays an important role in Eurythmy forms. The forms become more complex. Starting from a simple circle, the splitting into two. Triangles, the square, pentagrams, 7 pointed star and continuous forms i.e.. like the moving rainbow, the crown and the lemniscate.
We can even express colour, the planets and constellations in Eurythmy gestures…. But for now we will keep it to vowels and consonants.
Laughing and happy when we can move together.
Stamping the beat, clapping the rhythm or melody.
Class 5 and Class 6 will experience pitch up and down their spine, expressing it with the rise and fall of their hands. The little ones listen to a beautiful piece of classical music, while lying on their backs. Afterwards sharing the pictures of their imaginations.
Sometimes we play games involving a lot of galloping or bring copper rods in the older classes to do very focused specific movements! 7 fold,12 fold, waterfall and twirling.
Class 6 are immersed in a series of movement forms choreographed for their winter lanterns to take centre stage for our solstice festival later this term.
I love to see the students leave the hall after their class with levity in their steps.
This is the point! Eurythmy can give an experience through moving their body, connecting with life energy, to direct their feelings and develop an awareness to stand tall. As this awareness develops, the student can move on their own path without being influenced by their neighbours. At the same time be aware of their periphery and move together in harmony. We are practicing the gifts we are given as humans.
When we are fully integrated we are happy and have levity!!
Loving kindness Julie
