YSS Newsletter 2026 Term 2 Week 4

I feel for the first time the world Which, without my soul's participation, Would merely be empty, cold life And showing itself powerless To create itself anew Would, of itself, lead only to death. Calendar of the Soul -Rudolf Steiner

We acknowledge the Wadandi (Saltwater people) as the traditional custodians of these lands, skies and waterways where we come together at Yallingup Steiner School, and where learning has taken place for thousands of years.

We extend this respect to all First Nations people and thank the Ancestors, Elders, and custodians of the Wadandi community, who have cared for and continue to nurture Country, in their many restoration projects, community and cultural research and spiritual wisdom of the earth as sacred.

Welcome to Week 4

Dear Families,

As we move into Djeran, the season of first rains in the Noongar calendar, we notice the subtle turning of the year. After the beautiful run of sunlit days we’ve recently enjoyed, there’s a quiet promise gathering in the air—cooler mornings, shifting winds, and the long-awaited scent of rain on the way.

In a Steiner school, these seasonal thresholds are more than dates on a calendar—they are living experiences that shape our rhythms, stories, songs, and time outdoors. Over the coming weeks, children will be encouraged to listen for frogs, watch the clouds build, search for new flowers and insects and notice how the earth responds when the first steady rain arrives.

Djeran bring gentle showers to green our gardens and hearts alike, and may we meet the changing weather with warmth, gratitude, and wonder.

Kindest Regards,

Jacqui

Mothers Day Craft in the Dolphin Room

The glorious weather over the last week provided a wonderful opportunity to craft outside in our garden. The kindergarten children used warm soapy water to form small woollen balls, that  they gently rolled into beads for a necklace. They took great delight in choosing colours that they thought their mother would like. The children were very happy with the results.

Class One

Our Class One journey has begun so beautifully this year. Term 1 was filled with the important work of transition, learning how to be together as a class community, getting to know one another and slowly settling into the rhythms and routines of school life. So much of our work in these early months has centred on creating a calm, safe and loving classroom where the children can begin their learning journey with confidence and joy.

Through rhythm, repetition and artistic activity, the children have been building the foundations for all future learning. Painting and Form Drawing became our first steps into this work. Each lesson begins with a story or image to awaken imagination and feeling before the children move into artistic expression. They are learning to listen carefully to step-by-step instructions, to hold their brushes and block crayons with care and then to create their own unique version of the image before them. Throughout this process, there is a strong focus on movement, feeling and flow.

Form drawing and artistic work are deeply connected to the development of the young child. Through large flowing movements, curved and straight forms, colour experiences and careful attention to gesture, the children are strengthening concentration, coordination, fine motor skills and spatial awareness, all essential foundations for later writing and reading.

The children also immersed themselves in a beautiful Easter craft experience through wet felting wool eggs. Beginning with raw fleece, the children helped wash, card and prepare the wool before carefully transforming it through warm water, soap, rolling and gentle handwork into felted forms. The experience was rich in sensory exploration and practical skill-building, while also strengthening patience, perseverance and care for materials. There was much wonder in watching soft loose wool slowly transform beneath their hands into something strong, colourful and beautiful.

As we have progressed into a new term, the children have now learnt many of their letters and sounds and are beginning the exciting journey of writing and reading their first words and sentences. Once again, this learning is brought to life through the rich world of Fairy Tales and storytelling. Drawing remains an important part of this work, with the children using block crayons to create strong forms and rich colour without fine outlines, allowing the imagination to remain alive within the image.

In Steiner education, the learning experience is never only about reaching an academic outcome as quickly as possible. Instead, each lesson is designed to nourish the whole child, thinking, feeling and willing, through rich multisensory experiences. Through story, movement, art, rhythm and practical activity, the children are developing not only academically, but also aesthetically, socially and kinaesthetically.

It has been such a joy to witness the children settling into the life of Class One and beginning this journey together with wonder, enthusiasm and growing confidence.
